Most people who put off having a will professionally drafted do so because they believe that they don’t have much in terms of assets. As an exercise with all of my clients, I go through all of their assets, subtract off all of their debts, and come up with what their estate would be worth today. My clients are almost always surprised by how much they actually have. Once they realize this, they also often quickly realize that their estates, and their wills, are not so simple after all. If you thought you had a few thousand dollars and discover that, thanks to paying down your mortgage, you actually have a few hundred thousand, it can drastically change your estate plan. With extreme flattery to Scotiabank’s advertising, most of us are richer than we think and we should plan accordingly.
