Dying with dignity

Mourning

Dying flowerCurrently, in Quebec, a bill is making its way toward becoming law. Bill 52 would allow both physician-assisted suicide, where a doctor gives a patient a prescription to allow them to commit suicide, and euthanasia, where the doctor or other caregiver actually ends the patient’s life. The bill follows the European model, rather than the American one, and allows patients to access it whether they are terminally ill or have unbearable suffering.

With the case currently heading to the Supreme Court of Canada out of British Columbia combined with this new bill that is about to become law in Quebec, it is going to be a very interesting time for both sides of the right-to-die debate in Canada.
