In Ontario, you only have the right to inherit from a parent if you are the biological child or have been legally adopted. Historically, stepchildren have been excluded unless they have been formally adopted. I don’t expect this to change any time soon here, but there was an interesting development in Western Australia in that stepchildren are now being given the right to challenge the wills of their stepparents, if circumstances so warrant. Families are changing all the time, and the law is constantly working hard to keep pace with society.
