Choose your own executor

Mourning

I reference Gerry Beyer’s Wills, Trusts & Estates Prof Blog a lot because he has so much good stuff there. I’ve had this one in the back of my mind for several months and finally have the chance to post it.

Gerry wrote back in November about a checklist for choosing your executor (also known as a trustee or estate trustee). Some primary points to consider: how long it will take to administer  your estate; whether your trustee will need any special expertise or skills; whether your trustee is trustworthy; and whether you have considered an alternate in case something happens to your chosen trustee.

Choosing an estate trustee is an extremely important decision, and one that could have profound effects on your estate and your beneficiaries. It is very important to choose wisely.
